Loons Have Landed
VCE biologist Eric Hanson has been working with loons for a long time (we won't say how long). Eric recently visited 9 territories and found 5 nests. "It's always a thrill to find a loon sitting on shore at the start of its month-long incubation period," exclaimed Hanson. On Zack Woods Pond, one pair was courting near an island nest site, with one bird cooing softly as it drifted near the shoreline. "Once I showed up to place some of the new nest warning signs, they became more curious and they obviously like the new easier-to-read text," said Hanson. Remember to stay clear of nesting areas during this critical time for loons.
